VIEREN Introduces Black Croc Leather Automatic Watch
The latest addition to the watchmaker’s collection of exclusive timepieces boasts modernity and Swiss savoir-faire

September 8, 2021 [New York, NY]: Toronto-based independent watchmaker, VIEREN, reimagined their signature rectangular timepiece in a striking all-leather rendition - a pinnacle of luxury design in the brand’s newest addition to their gender-neutral catalog.
Inspired by the designer’s storied fashion career, VIEREN’s new Black Croc leather automatic watch experiments with materials and textures to push the boundaries of luxury watchmaking to the extreme. The first leather dress watch to extend black crocodile embossed leather from the strap onto the dial to achieve a monochromatic look that plays on the idea of seamless continuity.

Inspired by the designer’s storied fashion career, VIEREN’s new Black Croc leather automatic watch experiments with materials and textures to push the boundaries of luxury watchmaking to the extreme. The first leather dress watch to extend black crocodile embossed leather from the strap onto the dial to achieve a monochromatic look that plays on the idea of seamless continuity.

Creating this modernist style required a new approach. Applying leather onto the dial without compromising our slim profile meant it had to be razor thin and meticulously finished. The hand applied indices were specially engineered using the latest technologies so they could pierce through the leather without breaking, while looking sleek and sexy.
At the time, the standard indices available (that would be strong enough to pierce through the leather) were double the thickness of the indices compared to our other OG Automatic watches. The studio told us it was not possible to have the indices the way we designed it and asked us to consider removing this important signature detail on our VIEREN dials.
But we weren’t convinced. We called everyone and sourced a dial manufacturer with the newest capabilities who was willing to create a custom slim dial index just for us. This kind of collaboration typically doesn’t happen in the watch industry for small independent brands so we’re very lucky to have had the chance to work with and learn from innovative suppliers with the latest technologies in machinery and manufacturing processes.

We were able to reduce the width of the index, but not enough to match the design of the other OG Automatic watches. We’re still 0.1mm off. So we then worked with a designer to re-engineer the indices to create the illusion of a slimmer profile from the top. If you look closely, the bottom of our index (sitting on the watch dial) is actually 0.1mm larger than the top (it bevels in like a pyramid) so it visually looks the same when you’re reading the time.
