1. Historical Contributions of Women in Watchmaking

The unsung heroines of watchmaking, women have significantly impacted horology throughout history. One of the earliest known wristwatches was commissioned by Caroline Murat, Queen of Naples, from Breguet in 1810, marking an important moment in the history of women and watch culture. Additionally, the work of Swiss watchmaker Elisabeth Dosso in the 20th century paved the way for future generations of female watchmakers.

Throughout the decades, women like Louise Moinet and Marie de France have made strides in mechanical watchmaking, proving that skill and creativity are not bound by gender. Their pioneering efforts laid the groundwork for future female horologists and designers, showcasing that women's contributions are integral to the craft.

2. Influential Female Leaders Shaping the Watch Industry Today

Women today are making notable strides in watchmaking, with specialized initiatives like workshops, exhibitions, and educational programs spotlighting and nurturing female talent across design, craftsmanship, and management roles. However, gender disparity remains significant, with women holding only about 17% of executive roles in Switzerland's watch industry, according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry. This gap highlights the ongoing need to break barriers and increase diversity, especially in leadership positions. Here are five inspiring trailblazers redefining the world of watches.

“As Canada’s first and only female founder of a luxury watch brand, I’m passionate about welcoming new voices into the world of horology.”

Inspired by her mother, a trailblazer in the watchmaking industry, Jess aims to honour her family's 50-year legacy while shaping the future of luxury watchmaking. Leube’s dedication to craftsmanship is evident in her approach, stating, “I have a special fascination with hand-made watches and clocks from the time before industrialization. Each unique piece tells a story about its maker.

3. The Next Generation of Women in Watchmaking

The future for women in watchmaking looks promising, with brands and industry organizations actively pursuing gender equity. Increasing awareness around diversity is driving companies to create more opportunities for women in both technical and executive roles. Initiatives tailored for women and the rising visibility of female role models in horology are set to inspire a new generation. By empowering women and recognizing their contributions, the watch industry can build a more inclusive heritage that enriches the future of horology.
